To find the meaning of the name Álfsól, we must travel back to the Middle Ages and the Skjöldunga saga.
This saga tells of a widowed viking named Sigurd Hring, who fell in love with a very beautiful princess of Jutland named Álfsól. Álfsól's two brothers refused to allow her to fall into a viking's hands, and although they were defeated by force of arms, they managed to poison and ultimately kill Álfsól.
Sigurd, upon seeing a corpse instead of clasping the hand of a living, loving woman, was so overcome with grief that he resolved to die with her. Upon his orders, the body of Álfsól was placed on a funeral pyre on his best ship. Once the fire had kindled and the ship cut adrift, Sigurd jumped onto the boat, stabbed himself and was burned with the fair maiden he loved.
Sterling silver can tarnish over time. We recommend using a flannel polishing cloth to clean the pieces.
